Nadi’s

​Network of energy channels. The sanskrit word nadi translates to "Channel", "Tube" or "Flow"

1. Ida Nadi, Lunar or feminine energy, left side of body, activates parasympathetic nervous system.

2. Pingala Nadi, Solar or masculine energy, right side of the body, activates the sympathetic nervous system.

3. Shushumna Nadi, Great River awakens spiritual awareness; central energy channel moving up the spinal column from root to crown chakras.

Prana Yayus

Pranic movements, currents, flows & aspects

  1. Apana Vayu; Root, downward & outward current, releasing, letting go

  2. Samana Vayu; Naval, inward current, assimilate, digest, balance

  3. Pran Vayu, Heart, intake of prana, feeds to all other vayus

Apana Vayu

Definition: Air that moves away

​ Location: Pelvis

 

Moon Practice, Tha

Movement: Downward

Action; Elimination

Element: Earth

Benefit: Elimination, Steadiness

Chakra: Muladhara; Root

​Pose Category: Forward Folds (FF)

Breath: Longer exhales, pause at bottom of the exhale

 

Definition

Apana translates as “The air that moves away”

Assisting moving prana downward inviting graunding and stability. A moon practice with longer exhales.

 

​Location

Apana Vayu is located in the pelvic region and root or Muladhara chakra. Apana Vayu pervades the lower abdominal area and pelvic floor.

​

Movement

The flow or current of pranic energy is down and out… releasing and letting go of energies, emotions, traumas, negativities that do not serve the body-mind-spirit. Allowing the toxins, traumas, samskaras, karmas and blockages within the body to move down and out of the system. Releasing all that no longer serves the body/Mind.

 

Action

Apana governs the elimination of all substances from the body, including toxins in the physical, energetic and emotional bodies.

Benefit of a Healthy Apana Vayu

Apana Vayu feeds and nourishes the organs of the reproductive and digestive systems of the body.

Apana Vayu expresses grounded steadiness and centeredness.

 

Dysfunctional or Weak Apana Vayu;

Activating Samana can help with these issues:

  • Intestinal problems

  • Sleep issues or irregularities

  • Weakness in the legs

Yoga Poses: Forward folds

Forward folds practices allow us to access Apana energy located in the pelvis and lower abdomen.

Seated forward folds

  • Single leg seated forward fold, double leg seated forward fold, wide-legged seated forward fold, butterfly forward fold, pigeon forward fold.

Standing forward folds

  • Standing forward fold, wide-leg standing forward fold, pyramid, standing yoga mudra

 

Pranayama, breath;

Practicing longer exhales and pausing the breath at the bottom of the exhale.
